We believe that natural curls are a blessing, but we also recognize that curly hair comes with its own set of unique care requirements. If you’re looking for tips to care for your curls, you’ve come to the right place! As Washington’s only curly hair expert, Rodi Salon has exactly what you need to enhance the look of your curls. Read on for a list of must do’s (and don’ts!) to care for those gorgeous curls the rest of us only dream about.
- Always detangle your hair when it’s still wet, and preferably with your fingers while the conditioner is still in it for protective coating. This will help minimize breakage while you tame that mane after (or in!) the shower.
- Shampoo is for your scalp! Don’t make the mistake of thinking you need to lather a ton of shampoo from roots to tips. Not so! Use only the amount of product necessary to cleanse your scalp and keep it there as much as possible. The detergents in shampoo can be very drying, and curly hair is dry enough all by itself.
- On the same note, conditioner is for your hair. Concentrate the conditioner on the length of your hair, away from your scalp. Your scalp creates all the moisture it needs, but the rest of your hair needs your help.
- Moisture is your friend. Naturally curly hair is also naturally dry hair. Choose hair products that are specifically formulated for curly hair. Here at Rodi salon, we use Ouidad, formulated with active botanicals and plant extracts to replenish lost moisture and nutrients.
- The absolute, number 1 rule of curly hair: do not brush when dry. Really, we hardly have to tell you, right? Brushing breaks up the hair strands that form the curls, can yank it out at the root, and even causes split ends. The result? A not so happy head of hair that ends up looking rather… well, large. No thanks!
- Don’t skip out on your regular trims and/or treatments by your expert stylist. Regular trims keep split ends at bay, and curly hair with split ends is curly hair with frizz. In addition, your stylist has fantastic treatment options to help keep those beautiful curls in hydration heaven, such as our Ouidad Deep Treatment Essential Curl Maintenance. Trust us, your tresses will thank you!

Hey guys! Summer heat is on the rise, and it’s about time you got an updated cut to get you through this next season. Men’s summer haircuts are all about looking good and staying cool, which usually means less hair. To help you get an idea of a new ‘do that might work for you, here’s a few of our favorite cuts that should easily fit the bill for great summer hair. Check it out, then give us a call to schedule your appointment today!
Crew cut. With this cut, you get the same summer look as with a buzz cut, but the top is kept slightly longer and squared off on the corners. This will help to make the face appear slimmer. Be sure to tell your stylist you want it squared off at the crown to keep the military-look to a minimum, and depending upon your hair type, you may want to use a little pomade to maintain the shape.
Summer undercut. If you’ve been wearing your hair longer all winter and aren’t quite ready to get rid of it all just because the pools have opened, try out the summer undercut. The sides are cut super short, and the length on top is kept, but there is no fade. The definition of an undercut is the dramatic difference between the top and the sides. The short sides will keep you cool in the heat, and the length on top will offer a variety of styling choices, from messy to slicked back. If you let the sides grow through the summer, you’ll be almost back to the length you were before by September.
High and tight. This well-known cut is perhaps the most versatile on the list. Even if you already have this style, you can optimize it for hot weather by going a little shorter on the sides than you would in the winter. Go down to the smallest clipper setting at the base, but not so close that you can see skin. Then, make sure the top is about two inches and ask your stylists to add texture with scissors so you can change the look at will. Clay will give it a messy look, pomade can shape it into whatever you want, and gel can make a slick, classic part. Simply add your product to towel-dried hair and you’re all set for the day!
Short pomp. The pompadour, the iconic cut made popular by the likes of Elvis and Morrissey, can take a bit of styling work, but you can get that same vibe this summer without running the risk of your hair deflating. It’s called the short pomp, and it’s really just a shorter version of the classic. Think of this as a high and tight with a bit more hair in the front.
You need that length in front to be able to comb it back over the rest to get the front bump. Use a medium weight pomade to keep the hold all day, then finish with some hairspray and you’re good to go.Here at Rodi Salon, we can offer you all of these haircuts and more! Even if you’re not exactly sure which look you want, we can help you decide. Make an appointment today by calling 703-288-3880, or come see us at 2070 Chain Bridge Road, Suite 181 in Vienna, VA. Whether you’re a big fan of the blowout, or you’ve never had one in your life (besides at the end of a haircut or color), there’s likely a thing or two you don’t know about the process. Here at Rodi Salon, we are big fans of the blowout, so we thought we’d offer a few helpful tips on the process!
Tip #1: Keep communication open. If you don’t like having certain products in your hair, or if you’re not really feeling the style once it’s finished, communicate that to your stylist. While you should be discussing the desired outcome before the blowout begins, you can speak up at any time to let us know if something isn’t quite right.
Tip #2: You can ask for texture! Or waves, or curls, or even just straight hair. A blowout doesn’t have to mean that you’ll end up with a sleek, round-brushed mane (though we can do that too!). We can style your hair however you wish!
Tip #3: Dry shampoo is your friend. Depending on the texture of your hair, the blowout can last anywhere from three days to a week. Using dry shampoo to absorb any excess oil at your roots in between appointments will help make sure your style looks great. To get some volume back into your hair after sleeping on it, flip your head over and use a bit of volumizing spray.
Tip #4: Don’t be afraid of hairspray. Hairspray was the product of choice back in the day, but nowadays many girls think that hairspray equals stiff, helmet-head hair. This is just not so! It is possible to give your style amazing hold while still allowing your hair to have incredible movement and body. Are you ready to try a blowout yourself? If so, our team of professionals here at Rodi Salon are ready for you! Make an appointment today by calling 703-288-3880, or come see us at 2070 Chain Bridge Road, Suite 181 in Vienna, VA. Curly hair, while already packed with life and personality, tends to get a bit intimidating when it comes to the idea of styling into elaborate styles. After all, getting our curls to behave in the first place can sometimes be a daunting task in itself! Here at Rodi Salon, we consider ourselves experts in curly hair. We’ve scoured the web to find a few of the hottest ways to style those curls so that hopefully we can take some of the fear out of trying something new!
Messy top knot. This easy going style lets your springy curls add some major personality to an easy updo. Help the bun stay secure, yet messy, with traceless hair rings, and allow some tendrils to tumble out to complete the look.
Corset french braid. This style involves french braiding both sides over a pulled-back and secured low mohawk-style ponytail, then wrapping and securing underneath for the finished cinched look. The result is an interesting ponytail with major style points.
Half bun. If you think you can’t do much with short curly hair, this style is here to prove you wrong! This simple, half up bun is simple, easy, and a gorgeous way to help keep your hair away from your face.
Relaxed ponytail. Somewhere between an ultra-high sleek ponytail and a low messy ponytail is this gorgeous mid-range pony. The volume and body from the curls give some much-needed personality to the look, and it can be worn for virtually any occasion.
Braided bangs with stacked bob. A stacked bob works great with curly hair, but on days you need to keep hair out of your eyes, braiding is the easiest way to go. Loosely french braid the hair from one side to the other, bringing in hair from the side closest to the face, as opposed from both sides of the braid. Pin underneath the hair to keep the braid secure and invisible.

Ladies, it’s time to talk about unwanted facial hair. I know, it’s not exactly the hottest topic of conversation, but so many of us deal with this common beauty issue! There are lots of different ways to go about managing this – bleaching, waxing, and even shaving. Here at Rodi Salon, we specialize in facial hair removal. Read on to learn about some of the benefits to this hair removal method, and why we believe waxing is the best way to remove unwanted facial hair.
First of all, waxing can be a fantastic exfoliant. While it won’t replace regular exfoliation, it does act as an exfoliant to help remove the top layer of dead skin cells. The fresh layer of skin underneath is smooth and perfectly primed to soak up any nourishing moisturizers you might apply afterward. This process of skin renewal will help you maintain a healthy glow, especially if waxing becomes part of your regular routine!
Next, say farewell to stubble! We know shaving can be more convenient because you can just quickly do it at home, but it also causes that obnoxious stubble. How? Shaving cuts the hair off right at the surface of the skin, which causes it to grow back with those poky blunt edges. That’s the last thing you want to appear on your upper lip or chin, am I right? Waxing, on the other hand, will remove the hair shaft entirely. This will cause it to grow back naturally with no blunt edges, and because the entire hair is removed, you can go up to two weeks before needing to wax again! Yes, please!
Finally, waxing requires less maintenance over time. Besides the fact that your technician has complete control over which hairs are waxed and which aren’t (hello, gorgeous brows!), waxing also causes less hair to grow back over time. Waxing the same areas will cause the hair follicle to stop producing hair over time. This is wonderful news for those of us who grow hair in places we really don’t want it- like the upper lip or chin! Making hair removal by waxing a regular part of your beauty routine will ensure longer lasting results over time! Are you ready to make perfectly shaped brows and a hair-free face a part of your self-care routine? Come see the professionals at Rodi Salon and allow us to make perfectly shaped brows and smooth skin a reality for you! It’s that wonderful time of the year, Christmas is just around the corner and the winter season is rapidly approaching. With it comes the cold, dry air that requires us to take a little extra care of our hair. During winter, our hair tends to get dry, brittle and experience more breakage. For this reason, we need to talk about a few ways you can protect your hair from the cold and keep it healthy so you can continue to experience the joys of winter.
Hydrate! Use conditioner every time you wash your hair and a hydrating mask like the Healing Moisture Moi Moi Hair Masque by L’ANZA once a week. This is a key element if you want to protect your hair from the cold since combining these two products will keep you nourished and prepared for the cold snaps.
Gentle Shampoos. Avoiding strong shampoos such as those for dandruff or greasy hair will help because they tend to dry and weaken hair. Ideally, use a mild neutral shampoo for daily use and regularly apply a hair oil moisturizer, such as coconut or jojoba.
Scalp Massage. Massaging the scalp is a very effective way to protect the hair from the cold. When you apply the mask or hair oil, massage the scalp to promote blood circulation and remove dead cells. After all, healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp!
Avoid Heat. There’s nothing quite like a steamy bath during winter, but washing your hair with hot water may weaken your hair’s health. As for heating tools, it is also advisable to carefully dry your hair with a towel to remove excess water and use your dryer sparingly. Heat drying weakens and breaks hair, so the less you use irons or curlers the easier it will be for you to protect your hair from the cold.
Cover up. Winter is the perfect time to style with a cute hat, not only for warmth but for the health of your hair! Covering your hair is a good way to avoid exposure to winter cold and moisture. Be sure that the hats and caps that you use are made of natural fibers, such as cotton or wool.
Don’t skimp on nutrients. A healthy diet is one of the most important things you can do to protect your hair from the cold. Foods rich in vitamins, proteins, and zinc will help you keep your hair healthy, shiny and strong. In addition, you should always make sure you’re drinking enough water to keep your hair protected and well nourished.
