Maintenance Tips for Color Treated Hair

You’ve taken the plunge and gone all in on a hot new hair color, but now what? Whether you have highlights, lowlights, or a full-dimensional shade, your color treated hair needs a little extra care if you’re wanting that hot new color to last. Because we’re here for you, we’ve made a list of a few of our top tips to keep your color looking vibrant and your hair looking healthy as we head further into spring.

Shampoo less. When you color your hair, the outer layer of the cuticle is opened so that the color can penetrate into the hair shaft. If you wash your hair too soon after your coloring treatment, this layer could still be open allowing that new color to be washed straight down the drain. Because it can take up to three days for the cuticle layer to fully close, we suggest you wait at least that long to shampoo for the first time after you color. In addition to this initial waiting period, cutting back on how often you wash will help you to maintain that color longer. We recommend using a good dry shampoo in between washes to help accomplish this.

Watch the temp. While super hot showers can feel amazing, they are not good for your hair color. To prevent color stripping, try washing with warm water and rinsing your conditioner out with cold. The warm water will allow the shampoo to penetrate the hair shaft just enough to cleanse it, and the cool rinse afterward will help seal in the moisture from your conditioner. We also recommend reducing your use of heat styling tools as much as possible, and when you do use heat to style make sure to apply a heat protectant first, which will prevent damage and will soften the hair.

Use high-quality products. Your stylist is an expert in hair care and should be your first stop when it comes to finding quality products specific to your needs. We recommend ColorProof Evolved Color Care to all our clients with color treated hair. This is a complete line of professional luxury products designed exclusively for color-treated hair combining the latest innovations in ingredient technology with best-in-class ingredients to create a new standard in color care.

Keep up with trims. Dead ends won’t hold color and fade faster than healthy hair, so be sure to keep up with regular trims (we recommend every 6-8 weeks) to keep your color looking fresh from root to tips.Is your color treated hair in need of a little extra attention?
